Patents
The Stazione Zoologica, through its Grant and Innovation Office, promotes the use, commercial development and exploitation of industrial property rights resulting from research results. It holds several industrial property rights, of which the patent portfolio is structured with titles (exclusively owned or jointly owned with other internationally prestigious research institutions) that are also European and international in scope.
A patent is a title by which the owner has a temporary monopoly of exploitation of the protected invention and prevents others from producing, selling or using the invention without authorisation. In order to be patented, an invention must, however, meet at least 3 basic requirements:
- Novelty
- Originality
- Industrial applicability
SZN has an Industrial Property Regulation implementing the changes introduced by Law No. 102 of July 24, 2023 "Amendments to the Industrial Property Code, referred to in Legislative Decree No. 30 of February 10, 2005" available at the following link: REGULATION
The list of documents on the topics of Protection and Exploitation of Research Results and the templates to be filled out to file a new patent application is in the following:
01. Patent filing request form
02. Disclosure of invention
03. Non Disclosure Agreement - NDA
04. Material and Data Transfer Agreement - MTDA
05. Agreement of joint ownership of Patent
All mentioned documents are available, in Italian and English version, at the following link: FORMS

ISSSB-International Summer School on Systems Biology, The Systems Biology approach to discover marine life: from a big eye to a microscopic picture (ISSSB)
Welcome to the first International Summer School on Systems Biology (ISSSB 2022) that will take place at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples, from October 10th to 14th 2022.
The school is intended for PhD students and early career researchers interested in a systems biology approach to ocean studies. Oceans represent a perfect example of a holistic system made of interconnected entities, both as species and as niches. Understanding how their interactions will results in its health and equilibrium require an interdisciplinary approach, from different scientific areas and technological, experimental and informatic skills. The aim of the school is to provide participants basic and advanced knowledge on Biodiversity, Ecological interactions, Evolutionary Genomics and Omic disciplines, to be used as an integrated approach for EcoEvoDevo studies and Biotech Applications in ocean studies. The five days programme of the school will combine theoretical and practical lectures on different marine organisms, research topics and technological tools, following the original path of the founder, Anton Dohrn, who conceived the SZN as an integrated network of scientists and disciplines. Social events will include visit to the SZN Aquarium, the Darwin-Dohrn Museum (DaDoM) and the city of Naples.
Admission to the course will be evaluated by the scientific committee based on the preliminary knowledge and motivation of applicants.

(Avviso D.D. n 2595 del 24-12-19)
Strengthening of the Human Capital of the Research Infrastructures
Title: Research and marine infrastructure strengthening (EMBRC-IT) – Strengthening of the Human Capital
Acronym: PRIMA
Code: CIR01_00029
Research infrastructure targeted by the project: EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre
Abstract
The main objective of the project is to complete and enhance the infrastructural strengthening realized through the PON PRIMA - with which the Italian node of the European research infrastructure EMBRC, coordinated by the SZN, has obtained a funding aimed at making the infrastructure the most important HUB for marine scientific and technological research at European level - through the strengthening of the corresponding human capital.
This refers not only to researchers and technologists dedicated to the realization of the technical-scientific activities of the enhanced infrastructure, but also to the support to the development and management of governance and to the promotion and strengthening of collaboration networks between infrastructures, at national and European level.
In this way, it will be also possible to respond to the ever-increasing demand for research personnel and expand the critical mass that will be able to develop and use RIs, increasing the positive impact both in terms of research and innovation and, subsequently, of employment and development of the country.
FishMPABlue2 PLUS - Transferring FishMPABlue2 approach to sustainably manage Small Scale Fisheries in Mediterranean MPAs

Summary
“FishMPABlue2 Plus” project is the follow-up of FishMPABlue2 and previously of FishMPABlue, which identified a set of governance measures (“FishMPABlue2 SSF governance toolkit”) that can allow marine protected areas (MPAs) to achieve conservation goals while at the same time delivering socio-economic benefits to small scale fisheries. FishMPABlue2 tested such a toolkit (i.e. by implementing these measures), on the field in 11 Pilot MPAs located in 6 Med countries (Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Greece), to assess and quantify its effectiveness in achieving expected results in terms of MPA ecological effectiveness, benefits delivered to small scale fisheries and social acceptance of management measures by stakeholders. After a collaborative process, i.e. engaging the relevant stakeholders (e.g. MPA managers, fishers etc.) to define governance measures to be implemented in each MPA, a scientific assessment was carried out to assess ecological, economic and social impacts of the implementation of the toolkit in the 11 pilot MPAs.
FishMPABlue 2 Plus, aims to transfer the governance toolbox approach to 11 new Mediterranean MPA from 5 countries: Secche di Tor Paterno MPA (Italy); Secche della Meloria MPA (Italy); Regno di Nettuno MPA (Italy); Pequerolle marine reserve (France); Cap d'Ail marine reserve; Lastovo MPA (Croatia); Velebit Channel Marine Reserve (Croatia); Karaburun- Sazan MPA (Albania); Butrint National Park (Albania); Samaria MPA (Greece); Pelagos Sanctuary (Italy-Monaco-France).
