Greetings from the International Summer School on “The Evolution of Enzymes and Metabolic Pathways: analysis, understanding and implications for biotechnology”

We would like to introduce the upcoming 2nd edition of the International Summer School on Protein Evolution (SSPE 2022) to be held at Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn from June 28th to 30th 2022 in the charming city of Naples.

Please take a look at the preliminary program:

This course is designed for PhD students and early-career researchers aiming at acquiring an interdisciplinary understanding of concepts and methods for the investigations of enzyme and metabolic pathways evolution, with insights into environmental adaptations and their potential biotechnological applications.

Admission to the course will be evaluated by the scientific committee based on preliminary knowledge of applicants and the number of participants will be limited to 25.

The course program integrates theoretical lectures with hands-on practical tutorials on function and evolution of enzymes and metabolic pathways, including their optimization for biotechnological purposes, providing examples of usage of public databases and software, as well as high-throughput analyses. Participants are particularly encouraged to work on their own laptop.

Attending the SSPE at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Naples, you will have the benefit of enjoying an exciting experience in a highly stimulating research environment, of visiting the new Aquarium and the DaDoM museum in one of the most inspiring cities in the world.

Detailed information on the program of our course and online registration form for the SSPE 2022 are available at the following link:

BENTACS - BENthos TAxonomy CourseS

Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn Naples

Italy, 24-28 October 2022

Application form

EMBRC IT LOGOThe Marine Organism Taxonomy (MOTax) core facility has launched a series of International Summer Schools (BENTACS - BENthos TAxonomy CourseS) focused on the taxonomy of the main groups of zoo-benthos from soft-bottom communities in the Mediterranean Sea. The courses will target in particular researchers and technicians from scientific institutions and from national/regional environmental agencies interested in the study of benthos biodiversity and ecology. A combination of lectures and microscope sessions will provide participants with a general theoretical framework and practical experience.

The 1st MOTax course will provide an advanced training on the taxonomy and identification of Polychaetes. It will be held at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Naples on 24-28 October 2022. The course will be focused on specific families of the largest class of annelids selected based on their ecological relevance, including species for which the taxonomic identification is particularly challenging.

Pectinaria koreni prostomioParticipants will be guided by expert taxonomists into the examination of preserved collections from different Mediterranean regions, as well as into the identification of their own samples. The course will offer an opportunity to discuss new challenges and perspectives into the fields of Polychaetes taxonomy and ecology.

Theoretical lessons

- ecological role of Polychaetes

- general aspects of Polychaete biodiversity, species complexes, cryptic diversity

- alien species

Pratictal lessons

- criteria for species identification in the following families:

Sabellidae, Sabellaridae, Serpulidae, Aphroditoidea, Eunicidae, Lumbrineridae, Onuphidae, Capitellidae, Magelonidae, Paraonidae, Spionidae, Cirratulidae, Glyceridae, Nepthydae e Terebellidae

- alien species

Melih Ertan Çinar (Ege University, Izmir, Turkey)
Adriana Giangrande (Università del Salento, Lecce, Italy)
Joachim Langeneck (Università di Pisa, Italy)
Marco Lezzi (Arpae Emilia-Romagna - Struttura Oceanografica Daphne, Cesenatico, Italy)
Luigi Musco (Università del Salento, Italy)

The course is open to 20 participants with documented experience in taxonomy and identification of polychaetes
