The Historical Archives of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn of Naples (ASZN) preserve documents related to the activity of the Institution from its foundation (1872) onwards. The archive was set up in 1969. It included institutional documents, private and public correspondence, photographs, scientific drawings, etc., and now holds also numerous historical documents donated to the Institute over the years.

The Historical Archives are subject to the Decreto Legislativo n. 42 - 22 January 2004 (Codice dei Beni Culturali e del paesaggio), and are under the supervision of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism - Soprintendenza Archivistica della Calabria e della Campania.
The mission of the Historical Archives of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn is the management, protection and enhancement of archival heritage preserved, and its appropriate use for scientific, educational and cultural.

Projects

archivioThe Archive, as part of MAB, participates in educational projects organized by the unit: during the years 2014-2015 and as part of activities for schools ("Catch a Book", "The School goes on board"). It introduces children to the life sciences through the story of the Institute. Within the frame of the project “La Villa Comunale di Napoli” we show them the evolution of the three buildings of which the SZN is now composed (by September 1873 the first one was ready. A second building, connected with the first by a bridge, was added in 1885-1888, the courtyard and the east wing were built in 1905).

As part of the dissemination activities “Maggio dei Monumenti”, we contextualized the history of the Institute within the history and growth of the Vity of Naples: the City assigned to Anton Dohrn, free of charge, a plot of land right on the water front on which he was allowed to construct and operate the SZN.

In 2015, the "International Year of light and technologies based on light" we analyzed, in collaboration with “ABB Reportages,” the person of Etienne-Jules Marey, doctor, engineer, artist and Neapolitan author of the first film images of the history.

Marey was a close friend of Dohrn, with whom he shared dreams, hopes and ideas that led him to analyze the movement of animals and man, and introduced new insights in the realms of science, art and culture.

biblioteca

The Library of the Stazione Zoologica was established in 1873. It is located in a five-floor structure build within an internal courtyard of the main SZN building. The first collection of the Library was donated by Anton Dohrn to "assist mightily all those, that come to Naples to work with Marine Zoology or Botany" (letter to Charles Darwin, 1872). Today the Library Collections include over 100,000 volumes (about 4 km of shelves), a collection of 5000 miscellaneous, early publications and reprints, and over 2,000 electronic titles and scientific databases.

From 1875 until 1955 the Library was located in the Fresco Room of the SZN. This room was dedicated to music and leisure, and decorated in 1873 with a cycle of frescoes by the German painter Hans von Marées and the German sculptor and architect Adolf von Hildebrand.

Our mission: to support research through access to information resources, collections, and services.

Projects

The Library, as part of MAB, participates in educational projects organized by the unit. In 2014-2015 as part of activities for schools ("Catch a Book", "The School goes on board") it introduces children to reading by means  of recreational activities like a treasure hunt whose clues, about the sea and its inhabitants, were hidden inside books, following a trail differentiated by school and class.

CUGThe Guarantee Committee (CUG) is an organization established in compliance with art. 21 of Law 183 of 4 November 2010 to foster the well-being of workers and oppose discrimination.

The CUG replaces the Committee for equal opportunities and the Joint Committee on the phenomenon of mobbing. It unifies the competences of these former committees in one body, assuming all their functions provided for by the law.

The CUG aims to promote a culture of respect for the dignity of the workforce and to protect people from all forms of direct or indirect discrimination, whether linked to gender, age, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, disability or language, which can affect access, treatment and working conditions, professional training, career progression and safety. In this context, the CUG performs propositional, consultative and verification tasks.

According to the mentioned aims, the CUG of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Naples (CUG-SZN) acts to detect discomfort conditions and to work out strategies able to improve the work environment, guarantee equal opportunities and promote the well-being of all members of the workforce.

The Zoological Station was among the first institutes in Italy to sign the Charter for equal opportunities, demonstrating the efforts made to enhance pluralism, contributing to the fight against all forms of discrimination.

The document can be freely consulted by other public administrations to adhere to equal opportunities policies.

All contributions of ideas to improve the working conditions at SZN are welcome! cug(at)szn.it

The Darwin-Dohrn Museum

Dedicated to the two giants of science and evolutionary biology, Charles Darwin and Anton Dohrn, the Darwin-Dohrn Museum - DaDoM – promotes the knowledge of the evolution of marine biodiversity.
Inside the DaDoM, visitors will voyage through the oceans through time in the footsteps of Darwin and Dohrn and many other scientists, discovering how organisms became adapted to all marine environments. In this journey through time and research, the public will understand the importance of the oceans in determining the conditions on the planet, will encounter the primordial forms of life that appeared in the oceans over 3 billion years ago, will discover evolutionary theories, and will encounter a series of fossils that show the evolution of forms and functions over the geological eras (walk through time).
Works of art, sculptures and historical biological samples will show how marine organisms move, feed, and reproduce, and the mechanisms that led to current life forms, in a gallery of biodiversity, from the simplest to the most complex organisms, to arrive at the multipurpose room of the DaDoM, housing a large skeleton of a sperm whale (beached along the Campania coasts and recovered by researchers), enriched by models of organisms that feed on the carcasses of these majestic giants of the sea when they arrive in the depths of the sea. The multipurpose room is dominated by a six-meter high wall that houses ten thousand preparations of animals from the Gulf of Naples, set up by the genius of Salvatore Lo Bianco and by those who followed his footsteps in the art of conservation.
The multipurpose room is designed to host thematic exhibits to explore topics of great scientific and popular interest, but also for scientific conferences and seminars, and is available to the cultural world for other initiatives of public interest, such as shows, concerts, exhibitions and film broadcasts. The museum itinerary also includes a journey through the studies and ancient maps of the Gulf of Naples, the discoveries of the over 20 Nobel laureates who conducted their studies in the SZN, up to the current research updated and exhibited month by month.
The Museum includes a large educational laboratory for students of all types and levels designed to carry out practical observation and study activities aimed at discovering the secrets of marine life. The upper floor of the building includes the staff offices, laboratories and organizations hosted by the Center. The Anton Dohrn Zoological Station has returned to the citizens of Naples, Campania and the whole country an asset of the city in its full fruition. This objective will also be extended to the outside of the building, making the garden of the Museum a place of knowledge in the open air. In fact, the garden hosts two scientific submersibles made available by the MareAmico Cultural Association and which have also been used for the exploration of the deep sea environments of the Mediterranean.
Depending on specific needs, the rear lawn or the roof terrace will finally host an open-air summer cinema for documentaries on the sea and for an international competition on scientific cinema and marine documentaries.

Scientific, Educational and Cultural Center in the heart of the city

With the aim of strengthening the so-called "third mission", i.e. the activities of dissemination of scientific discoveries, as well as the opening of research facilities to citizens, with their direct involvement, the Darwin-Dohrn Museum offers opportunities for scientific and educational collaborations, training of teachers and specialists in the sector, educational workshops, cultural meetings, and guided tours for citizens and tourists.
The Museum was inaugurated on December 9, 2021 but its layout will be continuously enriched with new material and new initiatives.
