Research interests

The correct identification of the species is essential for monitoring and conservation of biodiversity, and the measure of the wealth of species is the best indicator of this biodiversity. The phenotypic plasticity of a particular character, used for species identification, may also lead to incorrect identification which often does not take into account the presence of cryptic species and/or siblings. So the taxonomy based on molecular characters proved to be a valuable support to the classical taxonomy allowing to cope with the growing need for accurate and accessible taxonomic information. I am mainly interested in the interaction between plants, seaweeds and marine invertebrates, in particular working on molluscs gastropods, amphipods and brown algae.
Ecological, morphometric and genetic approaches are integrated to characterize the species and to assess the phylogeny and their genetic connectivity, with the scope to predict how these species will be affected by anthropogenic impacts. I combine also molecular and morphological methods (DNA barcoding promoting the growth of DNA banks and improving the information infrastructure), and standard databases and metadatabases to manage biodiversity data.
