Research Interests

Aging is a biological process characterized by the decline of physiological functions during time. To understand the biology that is peculiar to delay in aging, our lab is focused on the biology of the Greenland Shark Somniosus microcephalus. This animal represents the long living vertebrate so far discovered with a life span that can reach 400 years according to radiocarbon datation of its lens. Consequently, using a combination of omics, molecular, and histological approaches we tried to understand which molecular mechanisms enable its long living lifespan, comparing this Methuselah to deep sea sister species as S. rostratus (lifespan <60 years) and Etmopterus spinax (<10 years) in order to understand which pathway(s) are peculiar to its long aging.
