Research Interests

My research interest applies the study of biogeochemical carbon cycle in the marine environment, particularly the dynamics of dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC). DOC underlies a process called “microbial loop”, which allows carbon that would otherwise be sequestered (sinking) to re-enter the trophic network (linking) through a series of biological processes. POC consists largely of phytoplankton and bacteria, which are themselves involved in this mechanism. In order to better understand the carbon cycle in the sea, I collect and analyse data on different parameters of the water column: chlorophyll a concentration, used as an index of the presence of phytoplankton and measured by spectrophotometry; DOC and POC concentration, measured by specific laboratory instruments; stable isotope concentrations of the different levels of the trophic web, analysed by mass spectrophotometry.
