Curriculum Vitae

Research Interests

During my time working in Honduras and Mozambique I had a great time studying some of the most exciting marine animals that exist…a marine biologists dreamlife! We were doing amazing work, producing incredible results, and putting up a good fight to get the marine realm and its megafauna protected… but there was something missing from the picture. I felt we needed people on our side if we were really going to make a difference. And this is where the spark for my main research passion comes from. I strongly believe that if we are truly going to protect our oceans, we need to have those who know the ocean best and whose livelihoods are ultimately affected by conservation related decisions on board with us. Since my days living in beach huts and counting reef fish and manta rays, I have advocated for more participatory processes in marine conservation. My research and work experience has focused on giving those most marginalised a voice, finding ways to bring small scale fishers (women and men) to the table, and making sure they have the knowledge and tools needed to take better care of the resources that they need to survive. Identifying practical solutions to help conserve biodiversity whilst strengthening the capacity of vulnerable communities and helping to reduce poverty is what motivates me to do this job.
