Research Interests
Over the recent years, marine plastic pollution has become a critical issue on a global scale, particularly because of its degradation in water to form microplastic (MPs). MPs create various negative impacts: they are ingested by organisms, they enter the food chain and can act as a vector of pollutants. The increased awareness of mismanaged waste and its impact on the environment has led to a growing interest on the use of bioplastics to replace conventional plastics. The persistence of plastic in the environment deal with several factors such as the properties of the plastic itself and the chemical-physical characteristics of the environment, thus this research is challenging in a changing climate. For this reason, my PhD project aims to evaluate the degradability of Mater-Bi® in current conditions and in future scenarios of climate change and to study the effects of bioplastics on marine organisms. This project will integrated field and mesocosm approach in 2 sites along the Ionian coasts with different environmental characteristics.
