Research Interests
I am an ecologist and conservation biologist with a broad interest in understanding the large-scale processes shaping the distribution of marine and terrestrial species. My work integrates Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and packages, WebGIS technologies, ecological modelling, and remote sensing. Thanks to my multidisciplinary background—which spans ecology, zoology, genetics, evolutionary biology, computer science, and statistics—I have applied established spatial ecology methodologies to a wide range of organisms, from bacteria to whales. My research focuses on understanding how biotic and abiotic factors vary across space and time, how they interact, and how they respond to environmental changes driven by both natural and anthropogenic forces. I have investigated both marine and terrestrial ecosystems, with particular attention to those in Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
My scientific activity is essentially twofold:
1. to provide advancing knowledge in large-scale spatial and quantitative ecology, with the aim of supporting more effective land-use planning, biodiversity conservation, and habitat management; and
2. to promote the dissemination of my major scientific discoveries to the wider public by using accurate science communication and environmental education.
