Research Interests

Microalgae are a group of eukaryotic and unicellular microorganisms with a great morphological and metabolic diversity. Among them, diatoms are of particular importance in the biogeochemical cycles of many nutrients and are responsible of the great part of the primary productivity of the oceans. The diatom Thalassiosira rotula, typical of the Gulf of Naples, is the chosen candidate of my PhD studies, since it showed in previous works the ability to produce bioactive molecules with biotechnological applications.
My PhD project is focused on drug discovery, a very promising field especially in relation to diatoms, as they produce a great variety of bioactive molecules for defence, communication and adaptation to different environments.
