Research Interest

I have been a researcher II level at SZN since September 2018, having moved from Ispra (Institute for Environmental Protection and Research), where I occupied the same position from January 2008.
My research interests concern several aspects of marine biology and ecology with a special focus on large pelagic fish, their behavior and interactions among species, and also the impact of the litter on fish and fishery management. On these issues I studied swordfish behaviour during their reproductive period, movements and migration, feeding strategy and their overlap with other pelagic fish, as well as management of resources. Research leading to a Local Management Plan is central to my current activities. In order to better understand the availability of pelagic resources, (e.g. trend, distribution, migratory patterns) several factors (e.g stressors) such as climate change but also marine litter (e.g plastic ingestion) are currently being studied. In recent years I developed research on shallow and deep hydrothermal systems, with the main emphasis on adaptation of living communities to hydrothermal vents. Actually I am involved in a study on the distribution of Mediterranean Spearfish in Italian seas, complementary to the study on co-management of fisheries in Sicily and I am project manager of the Interreg Med project Plastic Busters MPAs: Preserving biodiversity from plastics in Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas.
