Research Interests

Development of deuterostome digestive system relies on Parahox genes, which are a sister group to Hox genes. Along with Hox genes, Parahox genes XloxCdx and Gsx facilitate posterior-anterior coordination of development of the deuterostome embryo. Hox and Parahox genes exhibit spacial and temporal collinearity in the embryonic development of many taxa, dependent on organization of these genes within the genome. Genome organization plays a crucial role in establishing Gene Regulatory Networks (GRNs) controlling gene expression and thus in embryonic development. Identifying the components of the Gene Regulatory Networks controlling ParaHox genes expression and uncovering topology of their interactions in multiple species would give insight into the molecular programs involved in the development of deuterostome digestive systems and their evolution. My project involves using ATAC-seq and RNA-seq data, bioinformatical approaches and in vivo validations to get insight into control of ParaHox genes and into the evolution of this control.
