Research interests

Phytoplankton has a key role in matter and energy transfer in food web and in marine ecosystems functioning. Phytoplankton abundance and diversity is sensitive to changes of environmental factors such as light availability, nutrients concentration, temperature, mixing and turbulence, depth of euphotic zone and selective grazing and may respond by shifting in cell size and/or taxonomic composition. Phytoplankton research is classically based on microscopic counts. In recent years, HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) analysis of phytoplankton pigments has been used to estimate phytoplankton functional groups. Several accessory pigments can be attributed to specific algal classes and/or types and are therefore used as taxonomical markers. At times these can be species-specific. This chemo-taxonomical approach allows mapping of main functional groups (including smaller size groups that are usually underestimated by microscopic counts and difficult to preserve).

My research activity involves the study of the taxonomic, chemotaxonomic and ecophysiological diversity of phytoplankton in different areas, including extreme environments such as Antarctica.
The research is structured in two different objectives:

  • Vertical distribution of phytoplankton communities in different matrices (ice, water) in the Ross Sea (Antarctica) and analysis of the sympagic, pelagic and benthic tropho-dynamics in relation to the evolution of sea ice dynamics and the chemical and physical properties of the water masses.
  • Temporal dynamics of main phytoplankton groups along the water column at a fixed station in the Gulf of Naples (LTER-MC), as related to with macro-nutrients and water column dynamics, using the chemo-taxonomic approach.
