Research Interests

My project focus on new perspectives in the application of Internet of Things (IoT) for sustainable biotechnological tools and marine ecology investigations. This research is aimed at demonstrating that new technological approaches would support the sustainable production of high-quality crops and permit a better comprehension of natural phenomena with minimum efforts and reduction of costs.
Specific objectives of the project are: to demonstrate that an IoT network may improve our opportunities to manage micro-environments aimed at the culture of aquatic organisms and maximize our power to control experimental or production conditions; to monitor the evolution of ecological processes, on a larger scale, using a network of intelligent probes.
For the former objective, intelligent tanks and photobioreactors will be developed as innovative solutions to rear model organisms and to manage experiment conditions in an intelligent and automated way to simulate specific scenarios as for the Ocean Acidification. Their performances, in terms of mortality, easy management and grow-out will be compared to the traditional systems, through a multidisciplinary approach, in order to demonstrate their technological efficacy and evaluate the impact on the quality of the production. For the latter objective, a network of probes will be deployed along a depth transect where a Posidonia oceanica meadow is already studied and monitored, in order to check the evolution of key ecological processes, as the growth rhythms of the seagrass meadow and its spatial expansion in correlation to a list of environmental and anthropic variables (anchoring boats, fisheries and other factors).
