Research Interests

My scientific interest lies on the main processes that govern macro-nutrients cycling (nitrogen, phosphorous, iron, and sulphur) in aquatic environments. These include the action of a wide array of organisms, including, prokaryotes, algae, macrofauna, and submerged plants. A prominent line of my research deals with the activity of filamentous bacteria (cable bacteria) able to mediate electric currents in the sediment. My work on this topic covers different aspects spanning between their metabolism, geochemical impact, and on the factors that regulate their occurrence and diversity in the environment. I address these topics primarily by applying isotopic and sensing techniques such as microelectrodes and planar optodes. During my staying at the Marine Symbiomes group at SZN, I am focusing on identifying microbe-invertebrate associations and on assessing their relevance for N transformations in benthic environments.
