Research Intersts

Gene regulatory networks (GRNs) represent a conceptual map that puts together cis-trans interactions in cell type specification or developmental processes at a given time and space. Even though GRNs are highly conserved, they can experience evolutionary changes over time. These changes are important because they can affect body shape formation. GRN evolutionary changes can occur in both levels of cis-regulatory and trans-regulatory elements. My research focuses on the study of the evolution of GRNs at the trans-element level - the evolution of transcription factors. In this project I aim to study the expression differences of the transcription factor Brachyury in the endoderm of two sea urchin species – Strongylocentrotus purpuratus and Paracentrotus lividus during the early development. Investigating the transcriptional role of Brachyury in these two species will give a chance to unravel the mechanisms of how transcription factors evolve and how their novel functions can affect GRNs and evolution of specific body parts. To reveal the direct downstream targets of Brachyury I will employ perturbation techniques and systems level analysis approaches, in particular differential RNA-seq and ATAC-seq data analysis using the bioinformatics tools.
