Research Interests

The study of genomes and transcriptomes of marine organisms has shown that the most complex organisms have evolved from the primordial bacteria. The continuous evolution of the protein sequences has given rise to "heterogeneous" enzymes that change their action profiles by hosting different substrates providing living organisms the ability to adapt and survive new habitats. The knowledge on the adaptation to unfavorable conditions can open new perspectives for new biotechnological and pharmaceutical approaches.
My research interests are focused on: 1. the study of the structure, function and evolution of enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of 5-thioistidines, molecules coming from the marine world, and considered powerful antioxidant agents, 2. the study of the molecular mechanisms induced by the use of these molecules as new therapeutic agents in mammalian model systems.
