Research Interests

Phytoplankton species produce half of the oxygen consumed in the world. This great contribution to our atmosphere makes these microscopic organisms essential for our survival. Among them toxic, harmful, benthic, mixotrophic and also heterotrophic species are found. The physiological interactions and sexual cycle of some toxic species belonging to the genus Dinophysis were part of my PhD-studies. Following my doctorate I obtained a fellowship to develop a project at SZN on the toxic benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata, endemic of the Gulf of Naples. This project allowed me to apply techniques I already knew to address new questions as well as develop new techniques that I needed to accomplish the work. The aim of my current project is the study of the under sea ice-associated microalgal biodiversity in the Ross Sea (Antarctica) since ice melting plays a pivotal role in phytoplankton bloom development.
