Research Interests

I’m particularly interested in the field of drug’s research. During my phD I want to be able to understand the best way to find, isolate and test active compounds, using the sea as a virtually infinite source of molecules. In order to understand all the processes that are involved in the biological activity is important to know as much as possible about the bioactive compounds. Because of this purposes, I’m highly interested in culturing techniques, separation techniques (Liquid and gas chromatography) and structural elucidation techniques (NMR, IR, MS…).
I’ll work with marine microalgae which are considered a potentially new and valuable source of biologically active molecules for applications in the food industry as well as in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetic sectors. They can be easily cultured, have short generation times and enable an environmentally-friendly approach to drug discovery by overcoming problems associated with the over-utilization of marine resources and the use of destructive collection practices (Lauritano et al, 2016).
