Research interests

The goal of LifeWatch ITA is to provide the scientific community  with  molecular data, metadata and tools that can enhance the possibility to study biodiversity. Within LifeWatch,  I participate in the Virtual Laboratory on Molecular Diversity. My activity at SZN focuses on the evaluation and analysis of molecular nucleotide sequences of phytoplankton species obtained from cultures and environmental samples. The aim is to update and implement phytoplankton molecular databases of target genes (18S rDNA and 16S rDNA) and to build up new specialized databases that can be useful to study protists biodiversity. In addition, I analyse metagenomics data (NGS) from different research projects by means of different bioinformatics tools, with the aim of standardizing workflow tailored for investigations on  phytoplankton biodiversity and ecology.
I am currently exploring the microbial biodiversity of the oceans through the analysis of metabarcoding data (V4/V9 hypervariable region of SSU rDNA) of eukaryotic plankton, using specific software and bioinformatics pipeline tools. The data analysed have been generated within the Ocean Sampling Day project (OSD), a synchronous worldwide sampling of microbial diversity launched through the EU project MicroB3, and at the Long Term Station MareChiara LTER-MC, in the Gulf of Naples, which is one of the 191 OSD. Specifically, my current research aims at investigating the distribution of harmful microalgae on a global scale (OSD dataset) and across the temporal scale (NGS data from LTER-MC).
