Research interests

In nature, chemistry‐based interactions often regulate growth and survival of micro‐ and macro‐organisms, thus determining biological success and shaping community processes such as seasonal succession, niche structure and population dynamics. What make these chemicals of human and commercial interest is related to their bioactivity and their potential application as pharmaceuticals for the treatment of numerous diseases. My research uses ecological insights on plant-animal interactions in the plankton to increase rates of discovery of possible medicines from marine microalgae. For example, we were the first to discover that diatoms produce anti-proliferative compounds (polyunsaturated aldehydes) that potentially sabotage future generations of copepods by inducing abortions, birth defects and slow development rates. These metabolites also activate extrinsic apoptotic cell death in lung and colon adenocarcinoma cell lines without affecting the viability of normal cells from the same tissue type, indicating possible biotechnological applications of such compounds. Currently I am exploring the biotechnological applications of microalgal secondary metabolites as pharmaceuticals and am involved in starting a research-based spin off company (BioSEArch s.r.l.) searching for innovative drugs with anticancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-infective activities. https://www.biosearchsrl.com/.
