Conservation of the marine environment: sea turtles as a case study
The research of our group belongs to the Aquariology Area. Our objective is the conservation of the marine environment and its diversity on both the organism and the ecosystem level. Sea turtles have been our main interest because they are an important umbrella species for conservation and their charisma serves to attract the public’s attention and raise awareness on environmental issues.
While main activities include the immediate rescue of animals in danger and the environmental education and awareness raising of the public, research efforts have been put into the study of cryptic aspects of sea turtle biology in an attempt to elucidate the effects of environmental changes and stress on endangered species.
